The Little Stuff When Redoing Your Kitchen

by Janette Mae

Many people automatically turn to remodeling and major construction work when they see that their kitchen needs a little sprucing up. Many also opt to change the biggest kitchen appliances like the oven and the refrigerator. Given that these changes do make the most impact, they also cost the most. When making a kitchen appear fresh, you don’t really have to spend a small fortune - especially when your major appliances are still good and running. Often, it’s the little things, the kitchen details that make the biggest impression to your guests and the least impact on your wallet. Now who doesn’t want that?

The first thing is to survey the situation. Look around your kitchen and see what can be changed around.

Are your countertops next to useless because they are cluttered with decades-old trinkets? Are you forced to chop food in the sink because you cannot use them? If you have not used a gimmicky appliance for the better part of the year, you probably don’t need it someplace that’s easily accessible. Stow it in the basement and regain some functionality back from your countertops.

How about your cupboards? Throwing out some of your dishes might sound like a simple solution. Too bad you can’t go that route. If you cannot have more space, the next best thing is to maximize what little space you do have. You have to go in there and rearrange everything so that every little nook and cranny is used up. You can place smaller bowls into larger ones – the same can be done for pots. If you are finished with the stacking, you can hang the remaining ones out in the center of the kitchen.

If the tiles are cracked and a little faded, you can’t really do anything but replace them. But in the meantime, you can place area rugs into the most battered parts of the floor to at least buy yourself some time. They will cover up unsightly cracks and stains. If you decide to go for this solution, be sure to use a material that is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, moisture, chemicals, and oil and grease. Fail to do this and you will be faced with a whole new set of problems.

Sometimes, no matter how often and how thoroughly you clean, your kitchen still stinks of stale food and grease. This is especially true with old kitchens wherein the stench has pretty much soaked into porous surfaces. If you can’t bleach them out, try masking them with scented aromatherapy candles. Potpourri is another option.

There is something innately fun with trying to be creative in coming up with a kitchen decoration idea that is cheap. Pressed and framed flowers and leaves – especially those that grow elsewhere are a nice interesting touch. Preserved fruits and pickled vegetables in different sized jars are also worth a try.

Making your kitchen fresh need not be expensive. You can make little changes here and there to get guests talking. All you need are some ideas and a willingness to experiment.
