Win Back Your Kitchen With Secret Storage Solutions
by Janette Mae
Modern technology has inevitably found itself into most kitchens. This has enables almost any process and cooking technique to be automated and is a great help to busy housewives everywhere. Although this has solved many problems, it has also introduced a whole set of new ones. As we accumulate kitchen appliances, we run out of space to store them. Before you know it, your kitchen is a cluttered mess and you can’t even find a simple bowl when you need it.
Kitchens use to contain only the barest of essentials:
- An oven and a stove, usually combined in a gas range- A few pots and pans- Cupboards- Counters and a table
That was that. Things used to be much simpler and extra spaces abound.Contrast that to the modern kitchen, which resembles a laboratory more than anything else:
- A microwave- A Kenwood- A blender or food processor- Sandwich maker- Electric kettle- A refrigerator and/or freezer- A dishwasher- Washing machine and dryer combo
And this is not even counting the myriad of gadgets: the potato peeler, the mandolin, and various specialized pots and pans for cooking pasta and such. This is kind of ironic because as the kitchen gadgets are increasing, the amount of time we spend cooking is actually getting less and less. We can attribute this to a hectic city lifestyle, but a bigger factor is the abundance of ready-made food choices. Fast foods compete with delis and full-service restaurants for your food budget.
So we accumulate stuff in out small kitchens. This can only lead to clutter. Enter kitchen storage solutions. You can use ingenious methods of maximizing what little space you have as well as creating new ones when all is used up.
- High ceilings are perfect for extended cupboards. Store seldom-used items and hazardous cleaning chemicals away from children’s reach.
- Hang pots and pans for a “country” fell. Also consider displaying antique plates.
- Have a special shelf made for bigger items like your microwave. Not only will you have a definite place for easier access, your countertops will be free for food preparation and other appliances.
- Have your oven fitted into cabinets so that the floor space it is occupying can be used for other things. A stove can be put on a corner and the surrounding area can be used for food preparations.
- Glass doors on cabinets can make searching for things a lot easier. You can look for say a bowl or plate at a glance without even opening it.
- Don’t be a pack rat. Instead of holding onto something just because you might need it one day, just donate it to charity. The space you save and the goodwill you gain will all be worth it.
- Washing clothes and cooking don’t really go together. Move your washing machine out of the kitchen and down the basement.
Remember, you can win the battle against clutter. Just be a little creative and don’t let a few challenges stop you.
